My conversation with Kerrick left me tossing and turning all night. I woke up exhausted. I was not the kind of girl to carelessly fling accusations or snide remarks at someone. I knew how painful words could be. It wasn’t my intent to hurt him. I just wanted to shut him up—to stop him from hurting me.

The smell of coffee floated through the air. Sliding out of bed, I freshened up and then lumbered into the kitchen in search of a hot cup of comfort. Kerrick sat at the table in front of his computer.

“Good morning.” I approached with shame. My behavior was despicable and I owed him an apology.

“Good morning. I made coffee. I hope that’s okay.” His eyes shot to mine and then back to his computer.

“I’m sorry about last night. I really am.” The lump in my throat made it almost impossible to finish my sentence. “I’m not like that. I was totally out of line. Can you forgive me?”

“There was nothing to forgive. You were right. I’m bossy and overbearing. I was out of line.” I followed his eyes across the room. He appeared to be staring into nothingness. “I hardly know you and yet I felt somehow I had some say over how things should go with you.”

“No, you saved me last night. You held me and cared for me. I lashed out at you because it felt like you were getting ready to toss me aside. You didn’t deserve my wrath.” Picking up his cup, I walked it into the kitchen to pour my first cup and refill his.

“I wasn’t tossing you aside. I was just establishing the expectations. I can’t be who you want me to be. You were spot on when you said there would be a lack of return on investment.”

The reminder of my words twisted my stomach. Harsh didn’t even come close. They sounded fine in the heat of battle, but today they were pure ugliness. “I was wrong, Kerrick. Those were words hurled in anger not in honesty.”

“Let’s just move on, Mickey.”

With two cups of coffee in my hands, I entered the dining area. Sitting across from him, I noticed the dark circles under his eyes. I guessed he hadn’t slept well either.

With my heart squeezing until it hurt, I realized he was the right kind of wrong for me. Strong and dominant, but kind and caring. I’d totally misjudged him. He was nothing like Morgan.

One steaming mug was placed in front of him. “When are you going to bring your horse to the ranch?”

His eyes flew to my face. I wasn’t sure if he was shocked by my offer of coffee or the abrupt change in subject.

“I can bring him anytime. What stall do you want me to have?” Back on neutral ground, the conversation flowed smoothly.

“You get first pick of any stall you want.” Happy that we were at least talking, I opened the conversation to something a bit more inviting. “I was planning to go to the supply store and pick up feed and other stuff we need for the ranch.
